Eco Beach Design and Construction

Original Eco Beach Cabin

The cabins were designed and constructed to be sustainable in the following ways:

Energy-saving design features

  • All Eco Beach dwellings were open-air in design, with waist-high walls to capture the natural cooling sea breezes. Whilst ceiling fans were provided, the need for energy intensive air conditioning was eliminated;
  • passive solar design through angled roofs, eaves for shade, elevation for cooling also eliminated the need for air-conditioning.
  • open-plan interiors capitalised on the natural light, reducing light fittings.

Sustainable construction features

  • building designs which enabled the natural vegetation to grow;
  • recycled materials used extensively for floors, walls and fittings. Almost all of the timber, screws, nuts and bolts used in the network of boardwalks were salvaged from Broome’s former ‘Pearl Coast Zoo’. The restaurant & bar were built from recycled telegraph poles, rafters and tongue and groove flooring. Even the beds contained recycled materials, with the posts constructed from disused telegraph pole T-pieces. In total, over 70 per cent of the building materials used in the development of Eco Beach were re-used or recycled products;
  • extensive use of timber and galvanized bolts and nails to ensure the longevity of the chalets in a sea-side location;
  • natural finish on the majority of exposed surfaces to reducing the need for synthetic paints and coatings;
